Washington State Fallen Firefighters Memorial Foundation

About WSFFMF

The Washington State Fallen Firefighters Memorial Foundation (WSFFMF) is a dedicated 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization born out of a unified mission: to provide a lasting tribute to Washington’s fire service heroes and unwavering support to the families and departments they leave behind.

Established in October 2015, the Foundation represents an unprecedented, collaborative partnership between the state’s leading fire service organizations:

Together, we work to ensure that no firefighter’s ultimate sacrifice is ever forgotten.

Our Core Mission & Legislative Milestones

Our primary purpose is twofold: to build and maintain a permanent, physical monument to our fallen heroes on the Washington State Capitol Campus in Olympia, and to deliver critical line-of-duty death resources, assistance, and emotional care to grieving families and fire departments.

For years, Washington State lacked a permanent campus monument. Today, that dream is rapidly becoming a reality through historic legislative momentum:

  • The Legislative Breakthrough (2024): The unanimous passage of House Bill 2091 authorized the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to officially partner with fire service stakeholders and the Department of Enterprise Services to begin design and construction on this sacred state monument.
  • Sustaining the Legacy (2025): To secure the long-term future of the monument, the Washington State Council of Fire Fighters successfully championed a dedicated Fire Service Memorial Specialty License Plate. Proceeds from these plates directly fund the ongoing maintenance of the permanent memorial and support the foundation’s outreach programs.

The Reality of the Call

Firefighting is fundamentally a job of unmatched peril and profound stress. According to extensive workplace data, firefighting consistently ranks as the second most stressful career in the United States.

The hazards of the job extend far beyond the immediate dangers of a burning building. Every single year in Washington State, 8 to 12 firefighters lose their lives to occupational and duty-related illnesses, including aggressive cancers and stress-induced heart attacks brought on by overexertion. When a firefighter falls, the impact ripples outward—shattering a family, fracturing a department, and leaving an entire community mourning the loss of a protector who gave everything to preserve the lives and property of others.

Honoring the Fallen

The WSFFF stands as a pillar of remembrance for our fallen heroes, their families, their fire service brothers and sisters, and the communities they gave their lives to protect. We believe that a life of service deserves a legacy of profound respect.

Every year, we gather at the Washington State Capitol Campus to celebrate their lives through the timeless, deep-seated traditions of the fire service. Guided by the somber melodies of Fire Service Pipe and Drum Bands and the disciplined reverence of Honor Guards, we ensure that their names are permanently etched into our state’s history—and that their legacy of courage shines on forever.
