William "Bill" Mack
Deputy Chief Bill Mack of Bonney Lake, Washington, passed away peacefully in the early hours of his 59th birthday on July 18, 2025, surrounded by the loving embrace of his family after a courageous two-year battle with occupational cancer.
Chief Mack dedicated over 30 years to the fire service, beginning his career with the City of Auburn Fire Department in 1992, and quickly rose through the ranks. In 2021, he brought his experience and passion for mentorship to East Pierce Fire and Rescue as deputy chief, where he continued to make a lasting impact until his retirement in 2023.
Throughout his career, Chief Mack was a champion for training and development, teaching CPR and EMT skills, leading multi-agency regional training efforts, and helping shape the careers of countless firefighters and officers across King and Pierce counties. Bill also served as vice president of IAFF Local 1352, district representative for the Washington State Council of Fire Fighters, and advocated fiercely for firefighter health, safety, and labor rights. His service extended far beyond emergency response, volunteering with organizations like the Nick of Time Foundation, the Lionhardt Organization, and the First Responder Liaison Network, always putting community first.
Bill was more than a courageous firefighter; he was a steady presence, a loyal teammate, and a true friend. His laughter, compassion, and quiet strength left a mark on everyone he met. He loved fiercely, and what a gift it was to experience.
While his passing reminds us of the risks firefighters face, it also gives us a chance to reflect on what mattered most to Bill—his family, his friends, and his community. He gave his best to all three, never missing a moment to show up with support, kindness, or a quick-witted remark. His legacy will endure through the lives he touched and the deep respect he earned from those who had the privilege of knowing him.
His warm smile and ability to bring joy and laughter wherever he went left lasting impressions on everyone he met. His passing leaves a deep void in the hearts of all who loved him.
His life, legacy, and joy of his life are survived by all those who knew him, particularly his beloved family—his wife, Jane; three sons, Taylor (Sarah), Joe (Kylee), Christian (McKenzie); and two grandchildren, Cooper and Addison.
